Chanel No. 5

In the evening, after an entire day spent scanning official documents and with his fingers trembling from all that dematerialization, a person might, as he his falling asleep, slap his forehead in the realization that he would feel better if, in the morning, he stopped doing his job and refused to wipe the dust of the scanner’s glass surface. Only the dusty bits of cellulose on his nasal membranes now remind him satisfactorily that, even though he is easily lost, he can just as easily still find himself.

Why political intellectuals, do you incline towards the proletariat? In commiseration for what? I realize that a proletarian would hate you, you have no hatred because you are bourgeois, privileged, smooth-skinned types, but also because you dare not say that the only important thing there is to say, that one can enjoy swallowing the shit of capital, its materials, its metal bars, its polystyrene…

Goff & Rosenthal gallery, Berlin, November 18 - December 30, 2006 Society permanently renegotiates the definition of drugs and our relationship towards them. In his forty-five minute found-footage film The Conquest of Happiness, produced in 2005, Oliver Pietsch, a Berlin-based video artist, demonstrates which drugs society can accommodate, which it cannot, and how the story of the drugs can be…
The Top 10 Czech Artists from the 1990s The Top 10 Czech Artists from the 1990s
The editors of Umělec have decided to come up with a list of ten artists who, in our opinion, were of crucial importance for the Czech art scene in the 1990s. After long debate and the setting of criteria, we arrived at a list of names we consider significant for the local context, for the presentation of Czech art outside the country and especially for the future of art. Our criteria did not…
Magda Tóthová Magda Tóthová
Borrowing heavily from fairy tales, fables and science fiction, the art of Magda Tóthová revolves around modern utopias and social models and their failures. Her works address personal and social issues, both the private and the political. The stylistic device of personification is central to the social criticism emblematic of her work and to the negotiation of concepts used to construct norms.…

MEANWHILE IN MOSCOW
MEANWHILE IN MOSCOW
Diana Mačulina
Recent events in Moscow demonstrate that contemporary art is coming into fashion: private funds and museums have opened. The day immediately following the opening of a show curated by Oleg Kulik called I Believe at the Winzavod Contemporary Art Center, a swarm of pilgrims of all ages and classes flocked to see it. This was lot of people for a Monday when one would think people should be at work.…

Goshka Macuga: The Nature of the Beast. Whitechapel Gallery, London.
Lizzy Le Quesne
In her installation The Nature of the Beast London based Polish artist and 2008 Turner Prize nominee Goshka Mucuga has created a unique venue for public gatherings. Boldly setting her own sculpture alongside one of Picasso’s greatest masterpieces, and an assortment of past and current documentation, this forceful new work speaks of complex, historically informed, human drives. The work explores…

No art is more easily recognizable to a traditionally Catholic town than religious art (this in spite of the damage the said religion has suffered due to the proliferation of church-sects that have robbed it of vital space throughout the years). The hordes that overstuff the churches every weekend have accustomed their eyes to the rather gory paintings and sculptures of bloody Christ carrying…
